T'was the season to eat everything in sight...

Image
Gawd I love to eat. The best thing about Christmas is that everyone is feeling jolly and hungry and thirsty and sociable. AND it's cold out so you can cover up the jiggly bits with a thick sweater and make like you are just, y'know, big-boned . My Auntie Bets sent us cookies. Holy crap. SO delicious. How do I know? Well, because I promptly ate them all up. That's how. Cute, huh! Extra tasty heads.... Chomp. Gone Seriously, I cannot be trusted around food at the holidays. I know that in the spirit of the season, I will be forgiven for my devouring ways. And anyway, January was invented by Weight Watchers, so it's cool.

Thanksgiving comes first

Oy vey. No one tells you that as you age you stop staring at your navel and start slowly looking at the world around you through the lens of experience. Which is making me into a complete Debbie Downer. Ugh.  I love Thanksgiving and I am not sure exactly why I should still. It signaled the brutal eradication of an entire civilization which we mark by stuffing ourselves stupid.  Can you imagine if in Germany there was a national holiday to give thanks for Kristallnacht? Maybe now is too soon, but in two or three hundred years? Who can say. What I do know is I can't discuss this with most people because pretty much no one wants to talk about sh*t that happened in the past, especially if they think they are going to be made to feel guilty about it. Everything ugly gets swept under the rug and we hope for better tomorrows.  You see where I am at with this kind of thinking? Debbie Downer City.  However I can't bring myself to not have some k...

My name is CalamityShazaam and I am addicted to books.

I love my Nook. Yeah, yeah, everyone has a Kindle, but I am in love with my Nook (thank you Evil Twinster) and I use it everyday. Which is why I will never be able to save up for the moped I want. I love to read and instant access to an online bookstore is exactly like an unlimited supply of crack to a crackhead. Sometimes on Mondays I will look at my bank account and be like "oh snap! I bought WHAT?" Eh, I suppose it could be worse, I suppose I could be addicted to actual crack. Well so here is what happened on Friday - I downloaded Tamar Adler's amazing book " An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace" and then stayed up all night and read it. Seriously. Remember how last post I was all like "a-wah-wah-wahhhh I waste so much foooood wah"? Well this is the book that fixes that problem for me. I woke up on Saturday and started cooking everything in my fridge. I made braised short ribs for Sunday lunch, two batches of beans, roast...

More to "love" about the local Kam Man

Image
The old Super 88 at South Bay has been replaced by Kam Man. Which basically means I still have somewhere to go and giggle like a school girl over things like this: These are the two least raunchy "supplements" available. Please note that the first ingredient in Stud Sex Power is "strong back". Which is the first thing I'd look for quite frankly. If none of those work, maybe try this tea.  It's a bietary fupplement*. *Probably not FDA approved though.

Ol' Timey

Image
Ol' my gawd I am SO sick of Ol' Timey. An ol' timey hobo wedding ! Ol' timey subway sign art! Just as bad as all those "Keep Calm and..." signs Ol' timey saloons ! Opening any minute now in Davis Square! Don't get me wrong, I am all for people opening new business, but I just don't get this "old timey is the now/new timey" stuff. The idea of a pre-Prohibition saloon that serves housemade Pork Belly Rye Whiskey and Ploughman's Platters and classic meat pies makes me wonder if the staff is also ol' timey - chaps with sideburns and suspenders and sleeve clips and ladies with rock-a-billy clothing and artful tats. Only because I feel like I have seen this done before. more than once, in real life and you know, in the history books. If I sound sort of cynical, I am. This kind of carefully "curated" atmosphere makes me think of Plimouth Plantation. Pubbing as a sort of living museum experience. Honestly I wo...

You know what this is, now what do YOU call it?

I cannot be the only person who calls these Teenies: Apparently they are really called Little Hugs. More like starter kits for toddler alcoholics if you ask me. Who puts a kiddie drink in a beer barrel? Further more, who markets this non-nutritive crap to kids? Oh wait.... Nevermind. Someone just threw a TwinkieFunyunFritoDoritoHoHoBigMac at my head. *sigh* No wonder we're all fat. These Little Hugs are cheaper than milk.

Ginger "ale" for the rest of us.

I bought this on impulse the other day and o.m.f.g. this stuff is ambrosia. I've been drinking it with club soda, a few crushed mint leaves, and lots of ice. It makes up for a lack of a/c.

One of the little mysteries of life.

How come the first cup of coffee always tastes SO DANG GOOD but each subsequent cup doesn't? And those single cup brewers don't do it for me either, so it's not because the coffee sits around disconsolately oxidizing. I guess I just need a bigger mug.

How much is TOO much?

In the past few days I have had an awful lot of Snapple Diet Peach tea. More than I care to admit to, but I will just say that I am beginning to smell suspiciously peachy. Better than lemon iced tea I guess.
